The few feet inside the door of an Oak Park ADU have to work as a small room of their own. Shoes, a coat, a bag and the day's mail all land there, and a person has to step in and close the door behind them without bumping a chair. We give that spot a durable floor, a closet or a row of hooks, a light switch on the latch side and a place to sit.

Floor, storage and light at the door

Porcelain tile or sealed concrete takes grit from the yard better than wood, so a patch of it runs from the threshold to where the living floor begins, set flush so there is no edge to trip on. A shallow closet with a pocket or bifold door saves swing space in a small plan. A row of hooks low enough for a child sits beside a higher one for coats. A ceiling light switched beside the latch, with the outdoor fixture on the same plate, means nobody fumbles in the dark with an armful of groceries.

A step-free way in, and the county

A threshold kept low and a door wide enough for a wheelchair make the unit usable for a visitor with a walker, and a level landing outside gives room to turn. Oak Park is unincorporated, so its permits come from the County of Ventura, whose inspectors check this work with the rest of the unit. Parts of the community are mapped for fire hazard, and on such a parcel the entry door, any glass in it and the landing follow the ember rules. The older main house keeps its own front door and porch as they are.
