Stucco and Exterior Work for Older Homes
Repairs and new exterior finishes that match the texture, trim and lines of an older house, with the wall behind them checked first.
Matching old stucco
Original stucco finishes were troweled by hand in textures that are hard to copy. We study the existing finish and work in small test areas until the patch blends. Where much of the wall has failed, a full recoat can unify old and new.
What is behind the finish
Cracks and stains often point to a problem behind the stucco: a failed window flashing, rotted sheathing or a missing weep screed. We open the wall at the problem, fix the cause and then patch.
Siding and trim
Wood siding and exterior trim on older houses can often be repaired with dutchman patches and new paint. Where boards must be replaced, we match the profile and reveal so the repair disappears.
Stucco & Exterior: questions
Usually, with test patches. The closer the color coat is matched, the less a repair shows.
Repair it if the boards are sound. Replace boards that have rotted, and match the profile so the wall reads as one.
Often because the window flashing has failed or the opening has moved. We check the flashing when we repair it.
