Floors, Plaster and Drywall in Older Homes
Original wood floors refinished, plaster patched where it holds, and new drywall where walls have been opened for wiring and pipes.
Original wood floors
Many older houses have oak or fir floors under carpet or vinyl. They can often be refinished, with damaged boards replaced from a closet or salvage. We test any old flooring adhesive before removal.
Plaster and drywall
Sound plaster can be patched and kept. Where walls have been opened for new wiring and plumbing, new drywall with a smooth finish is often the cleaner choice. We match the finish to the rooms around it.
New flooring
Where new flooring is needed, we choose material and thickness that meet the original floors at the doorways, so thresholds stay level.
Flooring, Drywall & Interior Finishes: questions
Often, if there is enough wood above the tongue. We check a board at the walk-through.
Keep plaster that is bonded and sound. Drywall makes sense where walls must open.
Older tiles and adhesives may contain asbestos. We test before removal.
