Hacienda Heights ADU Construction Around the Panel
Hacienda Heights ADU placement set by an older house's electrical panel: the open space it needs, a possible move and a feeder sized to the run.
If the older house's electrical panel hangs on a wall facing the yard, the space in front of it limits how close a Hacienda Heights unit can come. The electrical code keeps an open area at the panel, 30 inches wide and 36 deep, clear from the ground to above head height. A unit wall, a covered walk or a new fence inside that area fails inspection, so we measure from the panel before placing anything.
Where the unit can stand
That open area runs straight out from the panel's face, so its effect depends on which wall holds the panel. On a side wall, it may only shape the walk. On the back wall, it can push the unit's front corner away from the house, or stop a breezeway roof short. Relocating the panel is possible, and sometimes sensible when an upgrade is due anyway: a new one can go on a wall where its working space costs the layout nothing. Los Angeles County Public Works handles the electrical permit here, and its inspector measures that clearance on site.
What moving the panel involves
Relocating a panel means a new service entrance, so the serving utility has to approve where the meter goes and schedule the switch. The new spot needs its own open space, a path the meter reader can use and a mounting height the utility accepts. Inside the older house, the circuits that fed the old panel are spliced in a junction box or extended to the new one, and each is tested and labeled. Where plaster has to be cut to reroute a circuit, the opening is kept narrow. The day of the switch is set in advance, so the house is without power for one planned stretch.

ADU Construction in Hacienda Heights: common questions
The feeder is the line that changes most with placement. A long, thin wire loses voltage on the way, so the farther back the unit sits, the heavier the conductors and the wider the conduit may need to be. Water and sewer follow their own trench rules, and none of the trenches pass through the panel's open area, so it stays usable.
Often, though a breezeway can complicate it. If a covered walk joins the garage roof to the house, the code may treat both as one building, which brings rated wall and ceiling rules between the new home and the old one. Removing or separating that walkway roof is one way through, and it is settled at the start of design.
Look at the corners of the walls. If the main house has wide boards trimming each outside corner, the unit gets corner boards of the same width and thickness, which frame its siding the same way. A house where the siding meets at a mitered corner gets mitered corners on the unit. Trim colors follow the house's.
