Damp, salty air is the case for siding a Venice ADU in red cedar shingles. Cedar carries natural oils that resist decay, the shingles shed water course over course, and when one splits it can be slipped out and replaced on its own. Left bare, they turn a soft silver gray as they weather, and each one is fixed with stainless nails.

Nails, laps and what sits behind

Cedar reacts with plain steel. Tannins in the wood stain around an ordinary nail and slowly eat at it, a process sped up near the ocean, so every shingle gets stainless fasteners. Each course overlaps the one below by more than half its length, with joints offset so no seam lines up with the one beneath. Behind the shingles, a house wrap and a textured mat leave a gap where any water that slips through can drain and the backs of the shingles can dry.

Weathered, stained or painted

Bare cedar weathers unevenly at first, darkest under the eaves, and a bleaching oil can even out the change to gray. A semi-transparent stain holds a color longer and lets the grain show through. Where the older main house wears painted shingles or clapboard, the unit's shingles can be primed on every face and painted in its colors. At the corners, woven shingles or a pair of corner boards follow whichever the house shows, and the house's own siding is left untouched by the work.
