Can an older Long Beach house get quieter and less drafty and keep its original windows? Weatherstrip, storm panels and laminated glass, opening by opening.

Do the original windows have to go before the house gets quieter and less drafty? We answer that at each opening of an older Long Beach house, with the sash raised and a light held to its edges. Drafts mostly come through gaps at the meeting rail and the stops, and new weatherstrip closes them. Noise depends on the glass, so a sound frame can keep its sash and take an interior storm panel.

Drafts at a kept sash

Air leaks around an old double-hung where its parts meet: between the two sashes at the meeting rail, along the stops and under the bottom rail. A sash lock that draws the rails together closes the first gap. Spring bronze or pile weatherstrip set into the edges closes the others without stopping the sash from sliding. The weight pockets behind the jambs are another path for air, so when a sash comes out for new cords we seal the pocket covers too. Each window is checked again with the light once the work is done.

Quieter glass, kept or new

Single glass passes street noise easily. An interior storm panel fitted inside the casing adds a second layer with an air gap, and the original sash stays untouched outside. Where a unit is replaced, laminated glass in one of its panes dulls sound more than standard double glazing. On a coastal lot the new frame's outer face comes factory finished and its hardware is stainless, since damp, salty air pits plated metal. The stucco around a sound frame is left alone, and only a full-frame change cuts it.
