San Gabriel Windows & Doors With Laminated Glass
Laminated glass for entry doors and street-side windows on older San Gabriel houses: it holds together when struck, blocks UV and keeps the old sash lines.
Laminated glass is a pair of panes bonded to a clear plastic interlayer, and it is what we put in an entry door and in any window within reach of its lock. Struck hard, it cracks yet stays in the frame, which makes reaching through to the deadbolt far harder. The interlayer also screens out nearly all ultraviolet light, which helps floors and finishes hold their color in a San Gabriel house on an inland lot.
Doors, sidelites and glass near a lock
An older front door may carry a glass panel or stand between narrow sidelites, and glass within reach of the lock is the weak point. We replace that glass with laminated panes set in new glazing stops, keeping the door and its original hardware. Glass in and beside doors also has to be safety glazing under the building code, and laminated glass made to the safety standard satisfies that while adding the security. On a door being replaced, the lites are ordered laminated from the start, with the panel layout copied from the old door so the entry looks as it did.
Windows that face the street
Ground-floor windows beside a porch or a side gate can get the same glass where security matters to you. In a new dual-glazed unit, the inner pane can be laminated and the outer one coated, so a single assembly cuts heat gain, filters ultraviolet and resists entry. Laminated glass also deadens sound better than plain glass of the same thickness, which helps a bedroom that faces a busy street. Where an original sash stays, a laminated interior storm panel gives most of those gains while the old wavy glass remains on the face of the house.

Windows & Doors in San Gabriel: common questions
Keep the sash when its wood is firm and its joints are tight, and restore it with new putty and cords. If that opening later needs more security or quiet, a laminated storm panel can be added inside without touching the original. A sash with rot through its bottom rail, or a frame that will not close square, is better replaced.
New glass should not stand out beside the old. Before the order goes in, we hold a sample of the proposed laminated or coated glass next to an original pane outdoors, so you can compare the color in daylight. Grille pattern, rail heights and frame width come from measurements of the originals, and sound casing is kept.
San Gabriel's building division reviews new windows, new doors and enlarged openings in the city. Safety glazing is checked at doors and at large panes close to the floor, each new unit's energy label is checked against the code, and a wider opening needs a header detail. We put the application together and walk the inspector through each opening.
