What an Alhambra building inspector checks on older-house window and door work: tempered glass stamps, energy labels and headers over new openings.

The small stamp etched into the corner of a pane is one of the first things an Alhambra building inspector looks for on a window job. It shows the glass is tempered where the code calls for safety glass. The inspector also reads the energy label stuck to each new unit and checks it against the ratings listed on the permit, so those labels stay on the glass until the final visit is signed.

Where safety glass is required

Glass in a door, and any pane close beside one, has to be safety glass. So does glass near a tub or shower, a large pane set low enough to walk into, and glass along a stair or landing. An original pane in one of those spots is replaced with tempered glass even when the sash around it is restored, and the old glass is saved for another sash where the rule does not reach. The inspector checks each of these locations, so we mark them on the window list before any glass is cut or ordered.

When an opening gets wider

Widening a window, or turning one into a door, changes what the reviewer asks for. The application needs the new header size, the posts under each end and a note on how the wall still braces the house against sideways loads. An older house often has a light header over its openings, so the new one is sized from the span and the weight above. The drawing also shows where the plaster and exterior finish get patched, and the trim on each side is planned so the wider opening still looks like it came with the house.
