Canoga Park ADU Construction With Room to Store
Canoga Park ADUs with a storage closet large enough to stand in, shelved, lit and aired, its door styled after the cabinets in the older main house.
A storage closet you can step into, inside a Canoga Park ADU, has to hold far more than clothes. With no garage or attic in a small unit, it becomes the place for suitcases, cleaning gear, the vacuum and boxes of things used once a season, so we plan it as a room: a door that swings out, shelves at more than one depth, rods at the heights hanging clothes need, a light switched at the door and an outlet for a charging vacuum.
Sizing the closet to what goes in it
A closet works when its depths match its contents. Hanging clothes want about 24 inches from the wall, folded clothes and shoes far less, and bins or luggage the deeper end of that range. We frame the room so one wall takes rods at 2 heights and the opposite wall takes shelving, with a clear aisle between. Blocking set between the studs during framing lets shelves be screwed in wherever they are wanted later, and the door is hung to close flush with the wall outside it.
Air for the closet, style from the house
A closed room full of fabric needs some air moving through it. A transfer grille above the door lets the closet share the unit's conditioned air, which keeps musty smells from settling in. The older main house can set the closet's look: if it still has an original linen cabinet or built-in drawers, the unit's closet door and pulls can repeat their panel shape and hardware. Those cabinets in the house stay where they are, untouched by any of the ADU work.

ADU Construction in Canoga Park: common questions
Storage draws nothing, but a heat pump, a cooktop, a water heater and a washer do. A load calculation on the older panel shows whether a subpanel can serve them or a separate LADWP meter is the better route. The unit's water and drain lines leave the building near the kitchen and bath, and the house lateral is checked by camera before they join it.
Yes, though converting it gives up the storage the garage held, one reason the unit's closet gets so much thought. We check the slab for level and damp, pull a few boards at the base of the walls to look for rot and termites, and go over the roof framing. If the shell holds up, the wide car opening becomes a wall with glass and a door.
By measuring before choosing anything. We read the main house's roof pitch with a level and a rule, count its siding exposure, measure the window sash and photograph the trim at each corner. Those numbers go onto the unit's drawings, so its roof, cladding and window pattern follow the house, and the paint is matched to a sample taken from a sheltered wall.
