The largest single piece of an ADU decides how wide the way in to a West Hills back yard must be. A glulam beam, a bathtub, a sliding door or a water heater each has to pass the side of the older house and turn any corner on the route. We list those items, measure the narrowest gap and the tightest turn, and order sizes that fit, so nothing has to be cut or forced past the original siding.

Sizing the route to the delivery list

When the gap is narrow, the plan adapts. A long beam can be ordered in shorter lengths that splice over a post the engineer approves, a shower can be a pan with panel walls, and a sliding door can arrive as separate panels. Gates are measured too, and one that has to come off for the build is rehung with its original hardware afterward. Anything too heavy for a cart, such as a full pallet of tile, is split and moved in smaller loads.

Guarding the older house on the way through

Every trip down the route passes the original house. Its lower walls get a temporary cover, downspouts and hose bibs in the path are removed and later reinstalled, and any wood window sill within reach is taped and padded. Overhead, we watch the eaves and the service drop, which set the height of anything carried upright. When the work ends, the path is cleaned and the cover comes off, leaving the house as it was before the job began. Any scuff on the original paint is touched up from a matched can.
