Redondo Beach Windows & Doors, Opened With Care

What hides behind the trim of an older Redondo Beach window, from sash weight pockets to old wiring, and how finding it shapes a window or door quote.

A double-hung window hung on sash weights hides a hollow pocket down each side of its frame, and in an older Redondo Beach house that pocket can hold more than iron. A cord gone slack, a stud darkened by an old leak or a run of cloth-covered wire beside the jamb each changes the job. Rot means new lumber before a new unit, and old wiring brings in an electrician, so either one becomes its own line in the quote.

Weight pockets and what they hold

Opening the small access cover low on each side jamb lets us see the pulleys, the cords and the wood around them. When the sash stays, new cotton cord or chain goes in and the pulleys are cleaned so the window balances again. When an insert unit goes into the old frame, the weights come out and the empty pockets are packed with insulation first, since an open cavity there lets air move through the wall around the glass. On a coastal lot a pocket that stays damp can also hide soft wood at the foot of the jamb, which we cut out and replace.

Old wire and old pipe near the jamb

Knob-and-tube conductors were often run through the cavities beside windows, and an outlet under a sill may still be fed that way. Before a saw goes near the framing we test for live circuits and trace them. Any old circuit in the path of a widened opening is rerouted on new cable by a licensed electrician. On a kitchen wall, galvanized supply lines can sit in the bay under the window, and a corroded length found there is cut out and replaced in copper or PEX while the wall is open. The quote lists each of these separately.
