The electrical sheet gets close attention when an El Segundo backyard unit carries solar. The city's plan checker follows the array's output to the panel it feeds and checks that the bus and main breaker can take it alongside the unit's own load. Behind an older house, that panel may be the original, so we size any upgrade before the drawings go in.

Solar on the unit's own roof

California's energy code generally calls for solar on a newly built detached ADU, with exceptions for roofs too small or too shaded to host it. We mount the array on the unit, which leaves the main house's original roof untouched, and choose a roof plane turned away from the street where the sun allows. The unit's roof framing is checked for the added weight and the attachment points, and the rapid shutdown equipment the electrical code requires is shown on the drawings.

Connectors on a coastal lot

The structural sheets call out every hold-down, strap and anchor bolt with a coating suited to where it sits. Near the ocean that means stainless steel where damp air reaches the metal, and the heavier grades of hot-dip galvanizing elsewhere. Nails are specified in the same coating as the connector they fasten, as the hanger makers require. If the unit attaches to the older main house, the joint between new and original framing is detailed on its own, and the old walls are left alone wherever possible.
